Cardiac Monitors

What is The Test?

A cardiac monitor is a small, wearable device that records the heart’s rhythm. It is used to detect or determine the risk of irregular heartbeats (arrhythmias). Buckeye Heart and Vascular uses one cardiac monitor that can be programmed for 24 hours or up to 4 weeks. The monitor continuously records the electrical activity during the prescribed monitoring time frame.

Patient Preparation

There is no prep for this test.

What to Expect

A specially trained technician will attach the cardiac monitor. The monitor has two electrodes that adhere to your chest. One electrode will be attached to the monitor and one will be attached to a wire that is connected to the monitor. The electrodes are placed in specific areas on your chest where the most information about your heart rhythm can be obtained. The technician will explain how to care for the monitor and give any instructions for you during your prescribed monitoring time. Once the monitor is completed, there will be instructions on how to return it. A report will be formulated for the cardiologist to review that will include many details on your heart rate and rhythm during the prescribed monitoring time.
